Varun Chakravarthy’s usage in the ongoing tournament has drawn attention after the spinner was not allowed to complete his full four-over quota in multiple matches despite being among the most effective bowlers for India. On more than one occasion, he has been in strong rhythm early in his spell but was not brought back later in the innings, limiting his chances of further impact.

Against Namibia, Varun picked up three wickets in just two overs, yet did not bowl again in the remaining overs of the match. A similar pattern was seen in the subsequent game, where he claimed three wickets in three overs but was not reintroduced during the final phase, even as seven overs remained. The decision meant Varun narrowly missed opportunities to push for a five-wicket haul in both matches.

Despite the limited overs, Varun currently stands second on the list of leading wicket-takers in the tournament and is India’s highest wicket-taker so far. His figures underline his effectiveness, making the decision to hold back his remaining overs a point of discussion.

Former India spinner Yuzvendra Chahal raised the issue during a broadcast on Jiostar, questioning why bowlers are often the ones asked to compromise for team balance. Chahal noted that while batting milestones can be achieved frequently in T20 cricket, a five-wicket haul remains a rare accomplishment and Varun had come close to one.

“If someone has to sacrifice for practice, why is it always the bowler? Why not the batter? It’s always the bowler who is asked to adjust. In T20 cricket, you can score a hundred anytime, but taking five wickets can take years and Varun was very close to achieving that.” (Jiostar)

Former India cricketer and commentator Aakash Chopra also highlighted that Varun has completed his full quota only once in the tournament, suggesting that he could have recorded at least one five-wicket haul had he been allowed to finish his overs. Chopra further pointed out Varun’s importance going into the knockout stage, alongside Jasprit Bumrah, as India’s key bowling options.

Surprising that Varun isn’t finishing his quota of overs. Only once he’s bowled all 4. He would’ve taken at least one 5-fer if he was allowed to finish his quota.

With Varun already near the top of the wicket charts, the management’s decision to rotate other bowlers instead of allowing him to complete his spell remains a notable tactical talking point.
