Shortly after his debut, Shaw was chosen to face Australia in 2018. Unfortunately, he suffered an ankle injury during training, which led to his exclusion from the first Test. He was sent back home, with early reports suggesting he was "losing focus." However, Shaw himself quickly refuted these claims.

A few months post his debut, Shaw faced suspension when his urine samples from the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy revealed traces of terbutaline. The BCCI imposed an eight-month ban, backdated. Shaw explained to the board that he had consumed an over-the-counter cough syrup for a common cold, as advised by the pharmacist for immediate relief.

Rahane went up to him and said firmly, 

'Don't take one more step. No one will replace you on the field. I know nothing's wrong with you; I saw the ball hit you on your shin pad. Maybe you were waiting for an opportunity to go back inside, but that's not happening. Go back to short leg and get into position'.

In March 2022, Prithvi Shaw did not pass the yo-yo test before the IPL, falling short of the required score of 16.5 for men. He scored below 15. At least 25 Indian players were attending a camp at the National Cricket Academy to improve and maintain their fitness levels in preparation for the T20 World Cup later that year.

In February 2023, Prithvi Shaw’s car was attacked with a baseball bat by TikTokers after he refused to take a selfie with them. Later, he was accused of molestation by one of the TikTokers, but the court later gave him a clean chit.
